WHAT DO YOU KNOW? CLAIRE: WE SPOKE WITH DELAND HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR LANCE JENKINS BY TELEPHONE. ALONG WITH EVERYONE, HE IS DISAPPOINTED THAT BASICALLY THE PROGRAM IS SHUT DOWN FOR TWO WEEKS DURING QUARANTINE. TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO WE SHOT LAST FALL OF THE DELAND BULLDOGS ON THE FIELD. THEY’RE IN THE GREEN UNIFORMS AND YELLOW HELMET. THE START OF THE SEASON HAD ALREADY BEEN DELAYED BY COVID BUT PLAYERS HAD BEEN CONDITIONING AND STAFF HAD PLANS TO PRACTICE HELMET PROTOCOL TODAY. THEN CAME WORD OF AN ASSISTANT COACH TESTING POSITIVE. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JENKINS SAYS NOTIFICATIONS WERE MADE IMMEDIATELY TO EVERYONE WHO NEEDED TO KNOW. 12 COACHING STAFF WERE SENT HOME TO QUARANTINE, ALONG WITH SOME OF THE PLAYERS WHO HAD CONTACT WITH THE ASSISTANT COACH, JENKINS SAYS LESS THAN 20. DELAND WAS SUPPOSED TO PLAY SANFORD SEMINOLE SEPTEMBER 18, BUT SINCE PLAYERS AND STAFF WILL B IN QUARANTINE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 16TH, THAT GAME IS CANCELED. WHEN THEY DO COME BACK, PER STATE RULES, THEY HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST 6 PRACTICES BEFORE A GAME, SO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JENKINS SAYS THE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON FOR DELAND WILL NOW BE SEPTEMBER 25 AGAINST DELTON JENKINS SAYS THE BULLDOGS WORKED HARD WHILE THEY WERE HERE TO BE SAFE WHEN THEY WERE TOGETHER. A Central Florida high school assistant football coach has tested positive for coronavirus.DeLand High School’s athletic director confirmed the assistant coach tested positive for COVID-19.According to officials, the entire coaching staff and fewer than 20 student-athletes will quarantine for 14 days. Those in quarantine cannot return until Sept. 16.A game that was supposed to take place against Seminole High School has been canceled.This story is developing.
